Civil War: Josephus Cox applied for a Civil War pension on July 10, 1888 because of injuries from the service. He states that he had lived in Monroe Co. since his discharge from service 14 Jun 1865, except for a 2 and a half year period when he lived in Roseman, Christian Co., Illinois. In July of 1888 he listed his occupation as a farmer & carpenter. His application shows that he fought at Romney, Virginia, Piedmont, Virginia and Richmond, Virginia. He stated that he served in Co. D, 116 Regt. OVI from 13 Aug 1862 until 14 June 1865 and was discharged at Richmond,Virginia. He enlisted as a private, and was discharged as a corporal. Heserved in the Army of the Potomac commanded by Lieut. Samuel D. Knight, and he had enlisted from Graysville, Monroe Co., Ohio. In 1888, his neighbors Jacob Drum and James Dougherty witnessed that he had medical problems, and his doctors were all dead. Josephus suffered from Rheumatism of the right hip and shoulder (incurred from dampness while sleeping on the ground) deafness of the left ear (from guns being shot at close range) and from a felon on his left thumb, and the loss of bone tothe first joint. These pension applications also give some physical description and in this case Josephus was 5'10", fair complextion, hazel eyes, and black hair. He was a farmer at the time of enlistment and a carpenter after service.
