Burkhard Rieger was baptized at Benken, Switzerland on 19 Sep 1717. He was the son of Anthoni Rieger/Anthony Reager and Juditha Schaub of Benken. He became a tailor. He emigrated to America with his family in 1737. They initially settled at Tulpenhocken, Pennsylvania in present day Berks County. (Faust, SWISS EMIGRANTS IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, 1925, V2, page 110-112).

Burkhard Rieger's name was Americanized to Burket Reager. He moved to Virginia where he and his father were added to the List of Tithables for Augusta County, Virginia in 1750. (Records of AUGUSTA CO., VA., VI, p41). He lived in Frederick County, Virginia in 1766 where he was a property owner. His property was annexed into Berkley County, Virginia when that district was formed in 1772. Berkley County is now in West Virginia.

Burkhard Rieger (Burket Rager) was a Revolutionary War Patriot for the United States. He rendered material aid to the Continental Troops. (Reddy, WV Revolutionary Ancestors,
1930, page 66). He served as a Captain under General William Darke. General Darke recruited the Berkley and Hampshire Regiment (4th VA Regt) which was at the siege of Yorktown and witnessed the surrender of Cornwallis in 1781. (Gardiner, Old Berkley, 1938, pg 211-212).

He married Margaret Heyer. He died in Berkley County, Virginia in 1782. (BC, WV Wills, V1, p290-291). Burkhard Rieger (Burket Rager) wrote his will on 25 Jan 1773 but it was not probated until 15 Oct 1782. His widow, Margaret Heyer died after 1782.
